Visual Skills

Understanding the core-six visual skills allows lacrosse players, coaches and scouts to identify and improve visual weaknesses and enhance the athlete’s overall performance on the field.

Convergence is the ability to focus on objects within close proximity and judge their movement.

  • General ball control (stickhandling & passing skills)
  • Ability to focus on and receive a pass
  • Locate a quick moving ball

Divergence is the ability to locate objects in the distance, impacting an athlete’s ability to anticipate and react.

  • Scanning of the field & ability to quickly find open teammates or passing lanes
  • Ability to quickly locate an open part of the net when shooting
  • Passing/Shooting Accuracy

Depth Perception

Depth perception uses both eyes to locate objects in space to judge their distance, speed, and direction.

  • Ability to line up checks & closing of the gap
  • Seeing opponents in congested spaces
  • Judge the spin, speed & trajectory of the ball

Proper alignment creates no difference between the perceived location and actual location of an object.

  • Accurately lining up a shot or pass to hit intended target
  • Crispness & decisiveness of movements
  • Overall timing in passing & receiving skills

Recognition is the ability to observe, process and recall a series of visual targets, and respond properly.

  • Recognizing offense/defensive positioning & reading of the game
  • Anticipation & reacting to the ball
  • Overall lacrosse IQ & reading of the game

Tracking allows you to follow an object while continuously monitoring all other aspects of the game.

  • Anticipation of rebounds and deflections
  • Monitor the ball and developing play
  • Overall reaction speed
“I would say the one area of my game where it helped the most was tracking the puck. Tracking the puck was an issue for me in the past, but I felt that my efficiency this year increased exponentially from this training program
