“It's something you can always keep improving, your tracking and your vision, for me, that's something that I really prioritize in my game, so any edge you can find to improve that part of your game, I try and find those."

JUDGEMENT OF A SHOT
Arguably the most important position in sports, hockey goalies are vital to a team's success, which is why having elite visual skills is critical to performance. Goalies must remain focused and aware at all times – always being prepared for one-timers and incoming shots, along with monitoring a developing play or tracking of the puck as it moves across the ice.

Visual Skills

Understanding a goaltender's core-six visual skills allows players, coaches and scouts to identify and improve visual weaknesses and enhance the athlete’s overall performance in goal.

Convergence

Convergence is the ability to focus on objects within close proximity and judge their movement.

  • Ability to focus on an incoming shot
  • Ability to locate the puck in a scrum

Divergence

Divergence is the ability to locate objects in the distance, impacting an athlete’s ability to anticipate and react.

  • Ability to locate the puck following the initial save/deflection
  • Locating the puck near the blue line

Depth Perception

Depth perception uses both eyes to locate objects in space to judge their distance, speed, and direction.

  • Judge spin, speed and trajectory of a shot
  • Locating pucks coming from a distance

Alignment

Proper alignment creates no difference between the perceived location and actual location of an object.

  • Lining up position to make a save
  • Crispness & decisiveness of movements
  • Overall timing as a goaltender

Recognition

Recognition is the ability to observe, process and recall a series of visual targets, and respond properly.

  • Recognizing opponent's positioning
  • Anticipation & reacting to the puck
  • Overall hockey sense & reading of the game

Tracking

Tracking allows you to follow an object while continuously monitoring all other aspects of the game.

  • Reacting to deflections & passes
  • Overall anticipation & reaction speeds
  • Tracking the puck through the air as it approaches the net
"Vizual Edge truly gave me the edge I was seeking heading into last season. The convenience of a web based program and the cost are amazing. Plus the amount of time I saved by being able to train my vision right at my desk at home helped tremendously."
